Apostles of Linnaeus

As Linnaeus Apostles 17 student of Carl Linnaeus be referred to, which he sent as a plant collector in all parts of the world. Carl Linnaeus himself used the term for the first time in 1750. It was the year in which he began his tenure as rector of the University of Uppsala.

History

The first trips were possible due to the commitment of Count Carl Gustaf Tessin. He asked the Swedish East India Company, that every year a young scientist was allowed to travel for free on board their ships. The then director of the Swedish East India Company Magnus Lagerström, even an avid supporter of Natural Sciences, agreed. He gave each of the young travelers with its special attention and recommended them personally the care of the captains of the ships in which they traveled.

Not all mediated by Linnaeus students were able to complete their task successfully. DC Linnaeus first RPA traveling students did not survive the rigors Christopher Tärnström which broke out in 1745 from Gothenburg to China, still died at the end of the same year from the effects of unusual climate.

Another of his students, such as Daniel Solander and other Sparrman, both took part in expeditions of James Cook, and Carl Peter Thunberg enriched by their extensive findings and descriptions of the knowledge of the flora of the earth to a great extent.
