Applebay Zuni

The Applebay Zuni is a single-seat glider in plastic construction. The wing is designed as a shoulder wing and the tail as a T-tail. The Zuni and Zuni II has been designed for high performance gliding in the 15m class.

History

1975 George designed Applebay the Zuni for the 15m class. He hoped with this type to be able to break into the dominance of European Glider Manufacturers who also dominated the majority of the U.S. market. 1980 Zuni II was announced which should be completely revised. For example, the proportion of carbon fiber components and the original sidestick increased was replaced with a conventional joystick. Good luck was not granted the Zuni. The production came to a few copies.

Construction

The hull is made of GRP and has relatively large radii at the transition to tail and wings, which give the Zuni a characteristic appearance. Unusually for an aircraft of its class, and time is also of very high-set wings. The Zuni II has carbon fiber spars in the wing and landing gear doors from Aramidverbundwerkstoff.
