- 0999: After the death of Gregory V. Gerbert of Aurillac elected as the first Frenchman to the Pope and takes the name of Sylvester II.

- 2007: A severe earthquake measuring 8.1 on the moment magnitude scale triggered a tsunami that devastated the Solomon Islands. The up to five meters high tsunami costs at least 43 persons life, destroyed 13 villages, making 5,000 people homeless.
