Carnations for Freedom ( orig. " Capitães de Abril " ) is a Portuguese film from 2000, who plays the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
Action
On the night of April 25, 1974 the forbidden song Grândola, Vila Morena is the identifier for the coup prepare troops. When it is played on the radio, the coup takes its course and ends the Estado Novo regime and the Portuguese Colonial War. The film tells the bloodless "revolution of the main men " in various converging story lines, by accompanying the decisive personalities, but also ordinary people and intellectuals.
Reception
The film was the first movie that took the Carnation Revolution, and it represented graphically. He was the directorial debut of Maria de Medeiros, who also played one of the lead roles. It brings the viewer closer to the circumstances of the revolution by showing the historical events and connects them sent with fictional stories. The film does not go there too much in the historical details or the social and political derivation of events. He gets himself so his narrative momentum, but also its accessibility for an audience accustomed to entertainment films. The critics praised the film for the liquid interweaving the various storylines, his camera and a pleasant atmosphere. The performances by the actors were praised, as is the film music composed by Medeiros ' Father António Victorino de Almeida, and whose title theme was put forward by the group Madredeus.
The film won several awards and was a popular success ( among the ten most watched Portuguese films 1980-2001 ).
