Arab arch (Ágreda)

The Puerta árabe in Ágreda, a Spanish municipality in the province of Soria of the Autonomous Community of Castile and León, is a city gate in the barrio árabe ( Arab Quarter), which was built in the 10th century. The Puerta árabe is since 1931 a protected monument ( Bien de Interès Cultural.

History

The Puerta árabe originated during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. She served as access to the Moorish fortress of the 10th century, controlled the valley of the Ebro.

The horseshoe arch is prevalent in Islamic architecture and is therefore also called the Moorish arch.
