Aracá uakari

The Aracá - Uakari ( Cacajao ayresi ) is a primate of the genus within the family of uakaris Sakiaffen ( Pitheciidae ). He was described in 2008 as a separate from the black face - Uakari type and has its name from the locality of the type specimen, the Rio Aracá.

Aracá - uakaris resemble the black face - uakaris, but they have a darker skin and are slightly smaller. The body length is 36 to 40 centimeters, the tail is shortened considerably, as with all uakaris and measures 16 to 18 centimeters. The weight is 2 to 2.5 kilograms. Their fur is mostly black in color, at the back it has a reddish tint. The hair at the shoulder region are elongated and form a clearly visible sheath. The head is hairless except for the top, it is colored black. The ears protrude from the skin.

Aracá - uakaris inhabit a small area in the far north of Brazil, near the border with Venezuela. Its distribution area is located north of the Rio Negro, its exact dimensions are not yet known.

Over the life of these newly discovered species is still know very little. Maybe they are like black - face uakaris diurnal and arboreal, living in larger groups and feed on hard-shelled fruits and seeds.

The IUCN lists the Aracá - Uakari due to its small distribution area in which there are no protected areas, and hunting as " endangered" ( vulnerable ).
