Aracaju is the capital of the Brazilian state of Sergipe. It lies at the mouth of the Rio Sergipe in the Atlantic Ocean, about 350 kilometers north of the city of Salvador. It has around 570,000 inhabitants, which represents a large proportion of the population of the state.

The city's name is ( a parrot ) and " Cajú " composed of " Ara " ( a fruit ).

History

The city was founded in 1855 and planned applied to move the capital of the State of Sergipe São Cristóvão in a new city with better development conditions.

In 1910, Aracaju seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Aracaju.

Policy

Mayor of Aracaju for the election period 2009-2012 is Edvaldo Nogueira ( Partido Comunista do Brasil ) who exercises this office since 2006. Previously, he was deputy mayor.

In the local elections on October 7, 2012 João Alves Filho was elected Mayor for the 2013-2016 term.
