The Araxos (also: Airport Patras Araxos, official name: Araxos National Airport; Greek Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Αράξου ) is a Greek airport in the Peloponnese at Patras near the Cape Araxas. He is also an important military airfield of the Greek Air Force.
Approach
The airport is located 45 km west of Patras, close to the National Road 9 (E 55). The airport is barely connected to the public transport network. The arrival and departure is essentially just a taxi or private vehicle, partly also a public bus to Patras and Araxos possible. Package tourists will be picked up at the airport by bus.
Flights
For German-speaking countries, there are the following seasonal direct flights: TUIfly operates Araxos from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hanover and Munich (June 2012). From Zurich Air Berlin flies (from March 2012).
History
During the Second World War, the airfield was used by the Luftwaffe. In September 1943, the group of I. StG 3 of Megara moved to Araxos and flew from there missions against Italian troops on Cephalonia and Corfu.
