Arch of the Sergii

Golden gate of Sergijevac (Latin: Arcus Sergii, Croat. Slavoluk Sergijevaca ) is an ancient triumphal arch in Pula ( Croatia). The eight-meter high arch was given after the battle of Actium in 30 BC by Salvia Postuma Sergia as a memorial for her three brothers commissioned and paid for out of private funds (not government as usual ). It originally stood in front of the demolished in 1829 Porta Aurea (Golden Gate), the main gate of the city, and therefore is decorated on one side only. Through this gate was once the Via Flavia of Aquileia and Trieste to forum space. In a house next to the Sergierbogen lived the writer James Joyce in 1904 /05. He worked as an English teacher in Pula.
