Archduchess Maria Dorothea of Austria

Archduchess Maria Dorothea Amalie of Austria ( born June 14, 1867 in Alcsút, Hungary, † April 6, 1932 ) was a member of the House of Habsburg -Lorraine and by marriage Duchess of Orléans. She came from the Hungarian branch of the House of Habsburg- Lorraine, the Archduke Joseph († 1847) declined.

Life

Maria Dorothea was the second daughter of seven children of the Archduke Joseph Karl Ludwig of Austria (1833-1905) and his wife Princess Clotilde of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha (1846-1927), daughter of Prince August of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha and Princess Clementine d' Orléans. She was the paternal granddaughter of the Emperor Leopold II of Austria.

On November 5, 1896 married Archduchess Maria Dorothea in Vienna with her cousin ( second degree ) Louis Philippe Robert d'Orléans, duc d' Orléans ( 1869-1926 ), son of Louis Philippe Albert d' Orléans, comte de Paris and the Infanta Maria Isabella d' Orléans - Montpensier. This was her husband when Philip ( VIII ) pretender to the French throne and was considered for the followers of the Orléans - Bourbon as the rightful successor and great grandson of the last French king Louis -Philippe I.

The marriage, which by all accounts was unhappy remained childless. After the years of love affair between her husband and the Australian opera singer Nellie Melba was publicly, she handed the 1914 divorce; on August 19, 1914, the marriage was also annulled by Pope Pius X.. Until her death, the Duchess of Orléans lived in the Hungarian Alcsút and was buried in the crypt of the castle palace in Buda. Her ex-husband rests in the Chapelle royale de Dreux Dreux.
