Archduke Ernest of Austria (1824–1899)

Ernst Karl Felix Maria Rainer Gottfried Cyriak of Austria ( born August 8, 1824 in Milan, † April 4, 1899 in Arco ) from the House of Habsburg -Lorraine was an Archduke of Austria and Imperial Austrian field marshal lieutenant.

Life

Ernst was a son of Archduke Rainer (1783-1853), Viceroy of Lombardy from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1800-1856), daughter of Prince Charles Emmanuel of Savoy - Carignan.

Since 1845 he was on the recommendation of Field Marshal Radetzky owner of the infantry regiment No. 48, Ernst 1847 Major General of the Austrian army and fought in Italy against the troops of Giuseppe Garibaldi. On July 31, 1848 it succeeded him on the mountain of Tassano a great success and Garibaldi had to withdraw in the neutral San Marino and enter into negotiations had to be resolved, the associations of Garibaldi in its result. Garibaldi fled, and his soldiers surrendered. Ernst drew a San Marino and disarmed the troops. Ernst was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold and promoted to Field Marshal - Lieutenant.

Since 1858 Ernst was the commander of the 11th Army Corps in Budapest, later the 3rd Army Corps in Carinthia and Carniola. Ernst took part in the battle of Hradec Kralove and was subsequently commanding general in Styria, Carinthia and Carniola. After he was in 1867 appointed general of the cavalry, he retired a year later returned to private life. He lived partly in the family of his brother Rainer, partly in the so-called " royal house " on the Altvater in Arco. He died there in 1898 of pneumonia. Ernst was buried in the crypt of the Capuchin Crypt Ferdinand in Vienna.

Connection and offspring

Ernst was in a compound Laura Skublics de Velike et Bessenyö ( 1826-1865 ). It comes from the Hungarian gentry and was married to Ignacy Csendheli since 1843. She had two daughters from her marriage, Frances and Luiza. The marriage was unhappy, so that Laura in 1854 left her husband and her daughters. The marriage was annulled in 1856. In Budapest they learned Archduke Ernst know, and they went in a connection, both considered as marriage. A marriage - as is sometimes claimed - on 26 April 1858 in Ljubljana took place. The marriage certificate after the death of Archduke Ernst presented in the inheritance process 1900-1902 was a fake. Laura was known as Baroness von Wallburg and their children referred to as such, but there was no formal ceremony of this title. 1909 decreed the Austrian Minister of the Interior, that the need to take Wallburg the maiden name of her mother. Laura died in 1865 in Vienna to uterine cancer.
