Arden-Syntax

The Arden syntax is a programming language for the collection, description and exchange of medical knowledge in expert systems.

Description

The knowledge is in independent modules ( Medical Logic Modules, MLM) divided. The modules are divided into slots, which are in turn grouped into maintenance, library and knowledge categories. Each module must contain enough information to make a certain decision. You can be time-dependent, and access to external sources such as databases. Each module also includes information about the respective MLM database to keep intact as well as links to other sources of knowledge.

Data analysis, treatment protocols, display of contraindications, diagnostic analysis and management proposals are examples of possible applications of the language in the medical- clinical operation.

Origin

Arden syntax evolved from the HELP system of the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, the CARE system of the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis, the first Arden- system of the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City as well as from various other precursors to beginning 1990s.

Is named the language after the Arden Homestead in Harriman, New York, USA, where the first meeting ( " Arden Homestead Retreat " ) for common use of medical knowledge took place.
