Betel palm ( Areca catechu )

The betel palms ( Areca ) or areca palms are a genus in the palm family ( Arecaceae ).

Description

The betel palms grow as a single-stemmed Fiederpalmen. Depending on the type they reach stature heights up to 30 meters.

Dissemination

The home of the representatives of the genus of betel palms is located in tropical Southeast Asia; their range extends from Malaysia to the islands of the Solomon Islands, north-east to the Philippines, south to northern Australia.

Use

The approximately egg-sized red fruits of the best known representative of the genus, the Areca ( Areca catechu ), are used in Asia and Oceania as a luxury, but are also very toxic.

For cleaned and pressed leaves of the betel palm is dimensionally stable items such as disposable plates can be shaped.
