Argnidae

Argna biplicata ( Michaud, 1831)

The Argnidae are a worm family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). The family includes about 30 species that occur almost all south or east of the Alps. The oldest representative of the family come from the upper Miocene ( Paleogene ).

Features

The housings are relatively high, cylindrical to cylindrical- oval. There are mostly small, 5 mm wide forms. There shall be set to about 10 turns. The post-embryonic turns are usually ribbed or striped radially. The mouth is raised in the adult case something out of the turns. The upper edge is approximately straight, but often not parallel to the seams of the previous turns. The edge may be bent or something extended. It can project into the mouth or teeth laminations. In the genital apparatus penis and epiphallus are formed. However, a blind pouch ( cecum ) is missing on the penis or epiphallus. In the penis, at the transition to epiphallus are located on the inner wall of small tubercles. Appendix A penis is well developed. The stem of the spermathecae has no morphologically visible glands. A diverticulum lollies can be present or absent.

Geographical distribution and behavior

The types of families are located in the southern and eastern Alps, the Carpathians, in Spain, Italy, southern France, Switzerland and Greece. They live in forests under leaf litter, moss, Bodenmulm and between and under stones in rather moist habitats. Many species occur in montane areas.
