Arie Luyendyk

Arie Luyendyk ( born September 21, 1953 as Arie Luijendijk in Sommelsdijk, Netherlands) is a Dutch racing driver. His son, Arie Luyendyk Jr. is also a racing driver.

His career began in the 1970s by winning a national title. In 1977, he won the European Super Vee title. Then he went into the formula 3. The continued success led him in 1984 to switch to the United States, where he won the Super Vee immediately. From 1985, Luyendyk drove in the Indy Car Series where he was 1985 Rookie of the year, so best new driver. As one of the few top riders of the series, he moved in 1996 in the Indy Racing League, where he was a regular driver until the end of 1998. 1999 to 2003 he took up only at the Indy 500.

In 1990 he won the Indy 500, where he with an average speed of 185.981 mph ( 299.308 km / h ) set a record until 2013. In 1997 him a second victory at the Indy 500 managed plus the three pole positions in the years 1993, 1997 and 1999.

His other accomplishments include victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
