Aristippus the Younger

Aristippus the Younger ( ancient Greek Ἀρίστιππος ὁ Μητροδίδακτος Aristippus Ho Mētrodídaktos, Latinized Aristippus Metrodidactus; * probably in the 4th century BC, † probably in the 4th or 3rd century BC) was a Greek philosopher of ancient. Within the history of philosophy to count him among the Kyrenaikern.

Life, tradition and writings

If he has written what his writings are lost and also the testimonies (ancient reports on the life and teachings) are extremely rare. At biographical one knows only that he was a grandson of the philosopher Aristippus of Cyrene, and was taught by his mother, the philosopher Arete of Cyrene, which is why he ( German: the " Mother of the Instructed " ) the nickname Mētrodídaktos received. A pupil Aristippus the Younger was possibly Theodoros of Cyrene.

Teaching

The testimonies to the teaching Aristippus the Younger are hard to separate from those for teaching his grandfather of the same name, in addition, the reports usually refer generally to the Cyrenaics, not to individual philosophers such as Aristippus.
