Arjeplog Municipality

Arjeplog is a municipality (in Swedish: kommun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland.

Its main town, Arjeplog. Other towns are Jäckvik, Laisvall, Mellanström, Slagnäs. Through the community of the national route 95, called Silberweg, Skellefteå leads to Bodø.

Geography

The town is located in the heart of Lapland, extends from the Norwegian border along the Pite River and rivers Laisälven and the lake system Hornavan - Uddjaure - Storavan, which is drained by the älv Skellefte, about 70 kilometers to the southeast in the Skandenvorland. Approximately 1/3 of its territory lies in the high mountains with peaks 1200-1800 meters.

Arjeplog has a share in the national parks Padjelanta and Sarek and his field are another 13 nature reserves. Only a small part of the municipality in the southeast is used for agriculture.

Economy

Reindeer husbandry and forestry are traditional economic activities in the community. Also important is tourism, which has greatly increased after the construction of the national route 95 and the traffic moderate development of the mountain. Arjeplog has also become a center for winter testing of vehicles and associated equipment. This industry now employs as many people as tourism.

Silver

In the township the first silver finds were made around 1620 and 1635-1659 developed the mining industry. The annual silver recovery is estimated at 36 kilograms. 1659 mining village was destroyed by the Danes and Norwegians. The mining was resumed only in 1719 and 1810 set due to lack of profitability.
