Armathia

Armathia (Greek Αρμάθια (n. pl. ) ) Is a today uninhabited Greek island about 3 km northwest of Kasos. From there, they can be reached by small boats, Armathia, unlike Kasos a beautiful beach. Together with other small islands forms Armathia a chain-like archipelago northwest of Kasos, without which exposed even more of the surf populated north-west coast of the Dodecanese island.

Historical importance was Armathia in the Greek War of Independence, when the Turks used the island as a base for a campaign of revenge against the dedicated to the Greek side Kasioten. The gypsum mining in the 19th century the most important export, the annual production was about 8,000 tons. The small village had about 100 permanent residents, people lived from the proceeds of their fields and operated animal husbandry. In the census of 1951 only 8 residents are given. Every year on February 2 at the only church Ypapandi ( Υπαπαντή encounter " ), the festival of encounters ( Υπαπαντή Hypapante, Jesus met the prophet Simeon and the prophetess Anna ) celebrated.

The island is part of the 15.73 km ² Natura 2000 area Kasos and Kasonisia ( Κάσος και Κασονήσια ) GR 4,210,001th
