Armavia

Yerevan

Armavia (Armenian Արմավիա ) was the largest Armenian airline based in Yerevan and base on the Yerevan airport.

History

The company was already founded in 1996, but the flight operations began in 2001. 2002 Armavia agreed to an alliance with Siberia Airlines ( today: S7 Airlines ), which took over 70 % of the equity stake of Armavia, while the remaining shares in Armenian investors remained. In October 2002, the company took its first Airbus A320.

In August 2003, followed by a second Airbus, also took over Armavia Armenian Airlines routes from state-owned enterprises, which went bust. Subsequently acquired Armavia a monopoly of the Armenian government for certain lucrative routes ( for example, Yerevan - Moscow). In return, Armavia, domestic workers undertook to employ, not to reduce the number of flights offered and pay the state an annual fee of one million U.S. dollars. On 1 January 2005, Armavia took over additional routes of Armenian International Airways, which Armavia ascended to the largest carriers of Armenia.

2005 bought by the Russian billionaire of Armenian descent Mikhail Baghdasarow (actually Baghdasaryan, Armenian Բաղդասարյան ) the 70 % of the shares of Siberia Airlines. Baghdasarow is said that he maintains good contacts with the powerful Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian. The criticism of the World Bank at the monopoly Armavias which indicates that prices were inflated, was rejected by the authorities with the argument that Armavia was for national security is important because in the event of a resumption of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh Armavia unlike foreign providers, the flights would not adjust.

In 2011, Armavia Sukhoi SSJ was the global launch customer of 100-95, in July 2012, however, announced that they would not pick up the second Superjet ordered.

End of March 2013 presented Armavia until further notice the entire flight operations, at the same time insolvency proceedings have been announced.
