Armentières

Armentieres (Dutch: Poor animal Picard: Armintîre, West Flemish: Ermentiers ) is a commune in the Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the eponymous canton Armentieres.

Geography

Armentieres located on the Lys in the north- west of the municipal bond Lille Métropole Communauté urbaine. The city also lies on the border with Belgium.

History

Peace of Aachen

1668 fell Armentieres by the first Aachen Peace with France.

Industrial era and economic growth

At the end of the 19th century, the textile industry, the prosperity of the city mainly contributed to the middle of the 20th century evolved into Armentieres. Therefore Armentieres is today known as "the city of linen " ( " La Cité de la Toile ").

Mayor of Armentieres since 2008 Bernard Haesebroeck (PS). His mandate expires in March 2014. He succeeds Claude Hujeux and Gérard Haesebroeck who officiated 40 years as mayor and deputy was.

Attractions

The 1934 reconstructed belfry of the town hall of Armentieres in 2005 was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cultural Events

The " Fête des Nieulles " is a traditional modern ceremony, which takes place each year in September. Here, parades, animations and concerts are organized, and the election of the beauty queen " Reine des Nieulles ".

Armentieres also has a cultural hall, the " Vivat ", where the inhabitants can enjoy plays, dance shows and music concerts.

The football club " Jeunesse Athlétique Armentiéroise " (short JAA) was founded in 1911 and plays in the fifth French League ( CFA2 ).
