Armentières

Armentieres (Dutch: Poor animal Picard: Armintîre, West Flemish: Ermentiers ) is a commune in the Nord, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the eponymous canton Armentieres.

Geography

Armentieres located on the Lys in the north- west of the municipal bond Lille Métropole Communauté urbaine. The city also lies on the border with Belgium.

History

Peace of Aachen

1668 fell Armentieres by the first Aachen Peace with France.

Industrial era and economic growth

At the end of the 19th century, the textile industry, the prosperity of the city mainly contributed to the middle of the 20th century evolved into Armentieres. Therefore Armentieres is today known as "the city of linen " ( " La Cité de la Toile ").

The 1934 reconstructed belfry of the town hall of Armentieres in 2005 was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
