Arrival of the Hungarians

The Feszty panorama (Hungarian: Feszty - körkép ) is a 1,800 -square-foot circular painting, named after the Hungarian painter Árpád Feszty.

History

On a visit to Paris in 1891 Feszty saw a circular painting of a battle of Napoleon. He was so enthusiastic about this form of representation that he decided to create a circular image of the Flood. His father- Mór Jókai warned him of the financing problems of such an enterprise, which itself needed next to the picture, a building and a sufficient number of public visitors, so that the expected investment. Finally Feszty adopted the proposal of his father, in anticipation of the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar conquest, the painting "river of Hungary " to the Carpathian Basin and payable to the Budapest Millennium Exhibition 1896.

Then 140,000 forints were introduced into a limited partnership for the project. Under the direction of Feszty painted from 1892 to 1894 at times up to 20 artists on the canvas imported from Belgium, on Pentecost Sunday, 1894 to introduce the work of art to the public. Some landscapes come from László Mednyánszky; the battle scenes are due to Pál Vágó. Other participating artists were Adolf Barsy, Dániel Mihalik, Ferenc Olgyay, Celesztin Pállya, Béla Spányi, Ignatius Ujvári and Károly Ziegler. The circular painting was first exhibited in a round hall, at the site of the current Museum of Fine Arts. Although the image was one of the biggest attractions of the millennium exhibition, however, revenues covered not spending on the image and Feszty had financial difficulties.

After the celebrations the image from 1899 to 1909 was exhibited in London, and then exhibited on his return in a new building in the City Park, as the old hall now demolished and replaced by the Museum of Fine Arts. During the Battle of Budapest ( 1944), this building was hit by a bomb and the image severely damaged. The canvas was then cut, rolled and stored in eight-meter- wide pieces. The little proper storage worsened the condition of the picture also.

Only in 1991 began Polish experts under the guidance of two restorers Stanislav Filipiak and Ryszard Wojtowicz with the restoration of the image and after four years it was again in 1995 to the public. Since then it has exhibited in the Hungarian city of Ópusztaszer. Visitors can view the paintings of webs.
