Arroyo Grande is a place in San Luis Obispo County in the U.S. state of California, United States, with 16,700 inhabitants ( 2006). The municipal area has a size of 14.7 km ².

Geography

Arroyo Grande is located on the California Central Coast (Central Coast of California ) in the USA, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city covers 5.45 square miles and is located at an altitude of 114 meters. Temperatures rarely fall below -1.7 degrees Celsius in winter and summer temperatures are about 28.3 degrees Celsius a rarity. Arroyo Grande is 95 miles from Interstate 5.

History

The earliest inhabitants of the Arroyo Grande valley were Chumash Indians, who operated a brisk trade with other Indian tribes at a great distance. The first Europeans arrived with the Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo. The Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was established in close and extended their agricultural activities in the area. The village of Arroyo Grande was founded due to the particularly fertile soil and was given the name for " wide riverbed " in Spanish.

On July 10, 1911 Arroyo Grande were awarded city rights.
