Arsames (satrap of Cilicia)

Arsames (Persian Aršāma, Greek Ἀρσάμης; † 333 BC) was a Persian satrap in the 4th century BC.

Under the reign of the Achaemenids Arsames served as satrap of Cilicia, probably as the official successor of the Mazaeus. In the year 334 BC, he led his cavalry on the left wing in the Persian battle of the Granicus against Alexander the Great. Managed to flee from the battlefield, but he still could not move in time in a state of defense its capital Tarsus, because the army of Alexander had advanced faster than expected as far as Cilicia. Arsames fled to Syria, where he joined the army of the Great King Darius III. joined. In the Battle of Issus in 333 BC he was killed.

Cilicia fell to Alexander, who appointed there the General Balakros to his satraps.
