Artaphernes (son of Artaphernes)

Artaphernes ( Old Persian: Artafarnah ), son of Artaphernes, was a Persian general of the Achaemenid Empire in the 5th century BC. As the grandson of Hystaspes and nephew of Darius I, he was himself a member of the Achämenidendynastie.

From his uncle Artaphernes was appointed together with Datis in 490 BC to the commander of an army to fight against Athens. In the battle of Marathon, they were defeated by the Athenians and killed Datis. Artaphernes then returned to Asia. In 480 BC, he belonged to the invading army of his cousin Xerxes I, in which he led the contingents of the Lydians and Mysians.
