Arthur Cohen (politician)

Arthur Cohen KC ( * November 18, 1830, † November 3, 1914 ) was an English lawyer and politician ( Liberal Party ).

He grew up in Frankfurt am Main, studied at University College London and then at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. In 1872 he represented in an arbitration process in Geneva, the interests of England in the Alabama question in connection with the CSS Alabama and other ships who carried privateering for the Confederate States of America.

He was also in Jewish community affairs since 1874 Attorney-General and active. As the successor of his uncle Moses Montefiore, he was Chairman of the Board of Deputies of British Jews until 1894, when he resigned from this post. From 1880 to 1888 he acted as a member of the Liberal Party, the electoral district of Southwark in the House of Commons.
