Arthur James Herbert (diplomat)

Arthur James Herbert (* August 22, 1855 Abergavenny, Monmouthshire (Wales ); † August 31, 1921 ) was a British diplomat.

Life

Herbert went on 2 June 1879 as Attaché in the foreign service. From 1885 to 1887, he worked as secretary of legation second class in Tehran Arthur Nicolson. In 1887, he noted in the review of export volumes, that in Persia the cultivation of opium poppy had far-reaching displaces the production of wheat and other cereals. After a period as secretary of legation in St. Petersburg in 1888, he held the same position in Washington, DC displaced. From 1890 to 1892 he was secretary of legation in Buenos Aires, most recently, he served there as chargé d'affaires. In the same year, 1892, he married Helen Louise Gammell. Further stations of his career were Brussels (1894/1895) and Berne, 10 February 1897 to 1900 Stockholm, after which he was, as usual offset in the function of a legation secretary for two years after Copenhagen.

1902 Herbert was appointed Consul General in Budapest. In the Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt and Karlsruhe in the Duchy of Baden, he was from 1903 to 1905 fiscal support. On October 27, 1905 he was appointed plénipotentiaire in Christiania to the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister for. Near the Norwegian capital to his coach, injuring himself seriously. On 20.jul. / November 2 1905greg. he signed the Norway agreement. 1910, at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, he was ordered to Mexico. 1913 Herbert went into retirement.

Awards

Arthur James Herbert in 1905 was awarded the Knight Commander of the Victorian Order, three years later he was awarded the Grand Cross, the highest level of this award.
