Arthur Laban Bates

Arthur Laban Bates ( born June 6 1859 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, † August 26, 1934 ) was an American politician. Between 1901 and 1913 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Arthur Bates was the nephew of John M. Thayer (1820-1906), who was among other things, U.S. Senator for Nebraska and Governor of that State. He was initially taught privately. In 1880 he graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville. After a subsequent law degree in 1882 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began in 1884 to work in Meadville in this profession. In between, he continued his education at the University of Oxford in England in the years 1882 and 1883. Between 1889 and 1896, Bates was also a legal representative of his home town of Meadville. Since 1899 he has also worked in the newspaper industry.

Politically, Bates member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1900 he was in the 26th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Athelston Gaston on March 4, 1901. After five re- election in the 25th district of his state, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1913 six legislative periods. In the years 1905 and 1911 he was an American delegate to the International Peace Conference in Brussels and in Rome. In 1912 he abandoned a bid again.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Arthur Bates again worked as a lawyer and in the newspaper business. He was also active in the banking industry. In June 1924 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in part in Cleveland, was nominated to the President Calvin Coolidge for re-election. He died on 26 August 1934 in Meadville.
