Ã…s Abbey

The monastery Ås is a former Cistercian abbey in today's Sweden.

Location

The monastery was located near the mouth of the river Viskan in the Kattegat, about 14 kilometers north of Varberg in Halland, back in Denmark, and directly north of the town Åskloster. On the site there are two mounds.

History

The monastery was founded by a gift from the king's court by the later king Valdemar II to the Order of 1192 monastery in Soro Zealand from the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary and Esrom Monastery and built from 1194. In the monastery several children by King Magnus Eriksson and Queen Blanche of Namur were buried. The monastery was destroyed in 1535 in the course of the Count feud. The southeast part of the plant was excavated in 2011.
