Asahikawa, Hokkaido

Asahikawa (Japanese旭川 市, - shi) is a Japanese city in the sub-prefecture on the island of Hokkaido Kamikawa. It is the second largest city on the island after the capital, Sapporo.

Geography

The city is located away from the nearest coastal river of the same 116 meters above sea level and about 60 km. The river was named by Ainu Chiu Petsu ( dt wave flow). However, this was as Chup Petsu ( Sun River ) misunderstood, so that he was called Asahikawa ( Sunrise River ). Near the 2,290 m high mountain is Asahidake.
