Ascension Cathedral, Almaty

The Ascension Cathedral (Russian Вознесенский Кафедральный Собор ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the Kazakh city Almaty. The cathedral is located in the middle of the park, the 28 Panfilowzy.

Was built in the 56 -meter-high cathedral between 1904 and 1907 made ​​of wood. It is the second largest wooden structure in the world and one of the few completely preserved wooden constructions in the world.

History

In 1903 the Bishop of Turkestan decided to build a Russian Orthodox church in Almaty. The construction of the building took three years and was designed by architect AP Senkov. After four years of construction, it was finished in 1907. By 1911, the cathedral was hit by an earthquake, but suffered Thanks to the wood construction only minimal damage.

After the Russian Revolution it was used as the National Museum of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. In the 1930s, the building of various public organizations was used. Here is the first radio station in Almaty was enunciated in the church tower.

With the restoration of the cathedral was begun in 1973 and 1976 it was completed. In May 1995, the Cathedral was handed back to the Russian Orthodox Church, and two years later it was re-opened for worship.

The building was featured on a stamp issued by the Kazakh Kazpost 2003. She was also honored on June 2, 2007 by National Bank of Kazakhstan on a 500 tenge commemorative coin.
