Description

Appearance and foliage leaf

Asclepias fascicularis grows as a perennial, herbaceous plant, reaching heights of growth from 40 to 100 centimeters. It forms from woody rhizomes numerous stems. The prostrate to erect, relatively thin stems are usually hairy tomentose or glabrous.

Three to five relatively small leaves are arranged in whorls on the stem. The short petiole is only about 1 to 3 mm long. The membranous leaf blade is at a length of 3 to 12 cm and a width of 0.1 to 2.5 cm narrow oblong- lanceolate with him to the petiole towards tapering or blunt Spreitenbasis and sharpened or blunt end.

Generative features

The flowering period extends from May to October. The little - to many-flowered, doldigen inflorescences are twisted or crowded at the top node ( more nodes ). The thin inflorescence stem has a length of 2 to 4 centimeters. The bare or slightly downy flower stalks are also quite thin and 0.7 to 1.5 cm long.

The relatively small flowers are hermaphroditic, radial symmetry and fünfzählig. The five sepals are triangular, 1 to 1.5 mm long and fluffy to bare. The five strongly recurved petals are gray -pink or more rarely whitish and the corolla lobes are 3-4 mm long. The Gynostegium is short-stalked, dyed gray - pink or white. The stem is 1 mm high and about 1 mm thick. The corona lobes are hood -shaped, oval and about 1 to 1.5 mm long. The interstaminalen corona lobes sit basal and are acicular and by half longer than the staminal corona lobes. They bulge out gradually over the stylus head. The stylus head is cylindrical and about 1.5 mm high and 1.5 mm thick.

The upright on an upright handle follicles are at a length of 5 to 12 cm and a diameter of 0.7 to 1 cm thin and spindle-shaped. The exterior is smooth and bare. The oval with a length of 6 to 7 mm seeds have a 2 cm long white hair.

Occurrence and ecology

Asclepias fascicularis is found in the U.S. states of California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and in Baja California ( Mexico).

Asclepias fascicularis grows in plains, in the hills and in valleys to dry, but moist soils. Frequently it is also along roads and in the cultivated land, or to find discontinued cultivated land.

Asclepias fascicularis is one of the main food plants of the caterpillars of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus)
