ASEAN Football Championship

The Football Championship Southeast Asia (English ASEAN Football Championship, thai: อาเซียน ฟุตบอล แช ม เปีย น ชิพ ) is a regional football competition between the ASEAN countries, which is held every two years since 1996. Host is the ASEAN Football Federation.

Longtime sponsor of the competition was the Singaporean brewery Asia Pacific Breweries, which is why the tournament based on one of their products (Tiger Beer) was called the Tiger Cup. After the dissolution of the contract was the championship in 2007 ASEAN Football Championship, since 2008, Suzuki is the new main sponsor, so that the official name of the event since AFF Suzuki Cup is.

Thailand and Singapore were able to choose three championships for himself, Vietnam and Malaysia each won once.

History

The first edition of the tournament was held from September 2 to 15 in Singapore in 1996, attended the tournament participated in all 10 Southeast Asian countries. The participants were divided into two groups of five teams and the top two in each group qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals Thailand Vietnam defeated 4-2, while Malaysia 3-1 with laws against Indonesia. In the final, the Thais eventually won 1-0 and became the first winner of this tournament.

For the tournament in Vietnam in 1998 there was the first time a qualification phase in the first six teams to the remaining four courses played (the four semi-finalists from 1996 were already qualified ). Again there was a group stage followed by knockout tournaments, the final, Singapore sat 1-0 against hosts Vietnam.

In 2000, the third edition was held in Thailand, it took some time 9 teams. Thailand won the final against Indonesia confidently with 4:1. Two years later it came again in Jakarta at a Thai - Indonesian finals Thailand sat down in front of 100,000 fans at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium - on penalties to the hosts through.

For the Tiger Cup 2004, a rule change took place, so were played the semi-final and final matches in the play-off mode, that is, each team had at home and abroad to compete against the opponent. Singapore won the final two games against Indonesia 3-1 and 2-1 and became the second -time winner.

In 2005, the renaming of the tournament from 2007 was announced. Furthermore, it was decided in 1998 to reintroduce Applied qualification so as to reduce the number of participants from 10 to 8.
