The EP Aske ( no, ash ') is the second release of the Norwegian black metal band Burzum. It was published in March 1993.

Formation

The instrumental piece Dominus Sathanas was recorded in April 1992 in the Grieg Hall studio in August, the other two titles. For the second and last time playing with Tomas " Samoth " Haugen Emperor, who contributed the bass, with Burzum a guest musician. The background was that Vikernes briefly toyed with the idea to perform live and looked around for suitable musicians. In an early interview he gave to Jan Axel Blomberg of Mayhem as a drummer, and later he called Erik Olivier " AiwarikiaR " Lancelot ( ex- Valhall, ex- Ulver ). It never came to performances.

In January 1993, Vikernes was arrested for the first time after 1992 printed handout with the ruins of the burned down on June 6, 1992 Stave Church Fantoft circulated and he had publicly boasted in the Bergen newspaper Bergens Tidende with the crimes that had committed it and the Inner Circle. Him were laid several tried and committed arson to the load. Vikernes himself from arguing to have set the stave church on fire. It is believed that he took the photo itself. Lack of evidence, he was released in March 1993.

In March 1993, Øystein " Euronymous " Aarseth EP released on his label Death Like Silence Productions.

Artwork

The EP cover is a photograph of the ruins of the Fantoft Stave Church, which completely burned down in an arson attack on 6 June 1992. The first 1000 copies of Aske was a lighter that was printed with the motif of the cover, at. Ketil Sveen, co-founder of Voices of Wonder, who had taken over the distribution of all publications of Death Like Silence Productions, produced the lighter as a promotional item for the EP. He described it afterwards as "one of the silliest things " he had ever done. From participation Vikernes ' to the church arsons he claims to have known nothing:

"We thought that if he was crazy enough to light a church, he would not be so crazy, so even specify. We made the lighter because of the attention he got in the media. "

On the back of a crossed-out image of the hated in the Norwegian Black Metal scene, Anton Szandor LaVey, together with the words " no fun, no core, no mosh, no trend" can be seen.

Style and content

The songs are built very repetitive and simple. The song consists of elongated screams that often imitate the rhythm of the reef. The riffs are usually made of chords.

Mortising fra is Tårnet a fast black metal piece that consists of a monotonous riff and ends abruptly. It is the only published in Norwegian song of the EP, the text is reminiscent of Sauron the Dark Tower in the novel The Lord of the Rings. Dominus Sathanas is a short instrumental piece that is played by a guitar quietly. In this song you can hear faint whisper until a scream breaks the silence. A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit, a re-recording of a track from their debut album Burzum, concludes the EP. With its almost 11 minutes is the longest piece of the EP and longer than the first version. It was recorded at the slow pace, has little change of pace and is largely based on the same reef. A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit is an epic song about a dead boy in a tomb. This waiting to be freed from the tomb to haunt eternally damned as "lost, forgotten, sad spirit " must.

After Vikernes had turned away from Satanism and appeared as a right-wing extremist and Neopaganist, he tried to reinterpret his lyrics to Norse mythology and denied satanic tendencies:

" On Aske refers to the title of the EP on the present state of Odin's kingdom and to the future, God. ' The first title, Breaking fre Taarnet ' [, The call from the tower '] is about a reputation Odin from its tower Hlidskjalf [ ... ]. The only satanic ' title is, Dominus Sathanas ' Aske, translatable with, the ruler opponent ' or something like that. So where the hell they get the impression that I was a Satanist? "

Effect

With Aske and the reference to the outgoing of the Black Metal scene church fires Vikernes gave the subculture media attention and caused a copycat. References to church arson were found subsequently in other bands: Graveland from Poland was inspired when recording the demos in the Glare of Burning Churches (1993 ) of the events in Norway. On the cover of the picture disc version of Absurd - Facta loquuntur LP, the album Burning the Temple of God by Henrik " Nordvargr " Björkks project MZ.412 (both 1996), the book Lords of Chaos (1998) and the single Purify Sweden by Lord Belial (2003), in turn, the burning Frogn Church is shown.
