Askut

On the former Sudanese Nile island Askut ( ancient Egyptian Djer - Setiu ) was an ancient Egyptian fortress, which was built for the purpose of border security to Nubia during the Middle Kingdom. Since the completion of the Aswan High Dam, the island from Nubia Lake is flooded.

The fort, about 351 kilometers south of Aswan and of Sesostris III. built, was in the range of the second Nile cataract and had a size of 77 × 87 meters. The protective wall had a thickness of 5.3 meters and stepped spur-like manner with the bastions forth. The heavily fortified entrance guarded a temple and warehouses at the port. Inside the castle there was a commandant's house, barracks and huge magazines.
