Aso (Kumamoto)

Aso (Japanese阿苏 市, - shi) is a Japanese city in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū.

Geography

Aso is located east of Kumamoto and west of Oita.

History

The city of Aso came on 11 February 2005 by the merger of the municipalities Aso (阿苏 町, -chō ) and Ichinomiya (一の宮 町, -chō ), as well as the village Namino (波 野村, -son ) of the district Aso.

Japanese Studies

The region was formed in 1968/69 the center of the Japanology Aso interdisciplinary research project under the guidance of Alexander Slawiks from wiener Institute of Japanese Studies The research focus was on the areas of cultural and social anthropology, also created works for the economic and social history. The result of this long-term project, a documentation of the topography, social and economic history, to rural device inventory as well as the situation of burakumin in Aso Basin, is in three volumes.
