Assam Himalaya is a traditional name for a part of the Himalayas between the eastern border of Bhutan in the west to the Tsangpo River, the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra in the east. The highest peak of this mountain is the Namjagbarwa with a height of 7,782 meters. Other high mountains are the Gyala Peri ( 7.294m ), which is connected to the Namjagbarwa, the Kangto ( 7,090 m), the Nyegyi Kangsang ( 7,047 m), the Takpo Shiri ( 6,655 m) and the Gori Chen ( 6,538 m).

The area of the Assam Himalaya has been poorly understood and previously entered by a few foreigners.

The name " Assam Himalaya" is misleading, since some parts of the mountains are located in the southeast of Tibet and other rich in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Assam is the name of the Indian state, bordering Arunachal Pradesh in the south.

The area of the Assam Himalaya is part of a highly rugged low mountain range, on the moist monsoon climate with its one - tropical evergreen rain and cloud forest has grown. In the far west this vegetation goes back and there are the little wooded landscapes of Tibet again. From Tibet's capital Lhasa from areas of Arunachal Pradesh were administered until the end of the 1940s.

China does not recognize officially the Indian legal claim on Arunachal Pradesh, but there is a defined line between India and China, the McMahon Line, which accept both sides and stabilized the situation in this region.
