Astatinae

Astata boops

Astatinae is a subfamily of Crabronidae within the grave wasps ( Spheciformes ), which comprises about 137 species worldwide. It includes after Pulawski (2009) four genera. In Europe, the subfamily with 30 species is represented in two genera. Some authors of the subfamily is added to the genus Dinetus, this is, however, now regarded as the only genus in its own subfamily within the Dinetinae Crabronidae.

Features

The types of Astatinae are often colored black and red. They differ from the similar species of the genus Tachysphex including through a well pronounced Flügelmal on the fore wings, the venation of the hind wings, where the Analzelle ends after the turn of the media handlers, by two spurs on the rails ( tibiae ) of the middle legs as well as through normal point -trained eyes ( ocelli ). The females carry on Pygidialfeld a series of thick, curved, tight -fitting bristles. The compound eyes of the males touch each other at the apex.

Way of life

Males can often be seen with them when they lurk on exposed stone, wood, or on fallen leaves on the ground and constantly turn to overlook all directions. After flying up, they return again and again back to their seat waiting. The females lay their nests in the ground. The brood is supplied with bed bugs.
