Astrolabe Island

Astrolabe Iceland is a west of the Trinity Peninsula located in the Bransfield Strait island. It is uninhabited, has a length of 4.8 km and is home to various species of penguins (among gentoo and Adelie penguins ).

Discovered and named the island was during the first French Antarctic Expedition (1837-1840) under Jules Dumont d' Urville. One of his ships was called L' Astrolabe, named after the ship of the famous, but lost in 1788 navigator, sailed around the globe and geographer Jean -François de La Pérouse. This ship was also its name to the island.
