Description

Vegetative characteristics

The species of the genus Astroloba are small herbaceous, perennial, slow-growing, succulent plants. They sprout from the base form or by underground stolons small or large clumps that form erect or creeping stems with time. Your succulent roots are terete.

The numerous, erect - spreading leaves are arranged opposite one another or spirally, overlapping brick- shaped and are amplexicaul at their base. Your leathery, light to dark green to Glauk - green leaf blade is tapered and deltoid - acuminate or triangular. The upper leaf surface is flat or convex dashed and occasionally red. The lower leaf surface is convex and usually has a striking asymmetrical keel, which extends over two-thirds of the leaf length. The leaf margins and keel are sharp or slightly rounded, smooth or denticulate. The leaf tip is pointed and sometimes ends in a patch Spitzchen. The surfaces are smooth or warty and green or brownish.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence is a panicle or raceme lockerblütige of 10 to 40 centimeters in length. Occasionally arise from the axils coordinate branches or buds. The smooth flower stem is simple or branched. In the lower part there are sterile bracts. The membranous, persistent bracts are triangular or oblong-pointed, tapered and keeled. They have one to three brownish green or pink means veins. The flowers are on a short, upright flower stalk. They are upright, tubular, regular and more or less straight. Sometimes located on the sides of the perianth inflated cusp tissue. The six tepals are fused together at their base. In addition they are free, but adjacent to one another. The conspicuously veined tepals are usually colored in murky monochrome shades. They are often dirty grünweißlich, rarely cream, beige, yellow or pink. Their petals are short. The six stamens are shorter than the perianth and not or hardly protrude from her. The yellowish-white stamens are thread- thin. The yellow, dorsifixen dust bag rip open longitudinally and are intrors. The off-white, straight, kopfige stylus is subulate and about 4 millimeters long. The tiny scar is apically.

Fruit and seeds

The fruits are cylindrical, oblong or ovate to obtuse to acute, dreifächrige capsule fruits that rip open lengthwise. They are about 12 mm long and 5-6 mm wide. The fruits contain angular, dark brown to black, laterally compressed and edges indistinct winged seeds of about 4 millimeters in length.

Dissemination

The genus Astroloba is common in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa.
