Astronomical Society of India

The Astronomical Society of India ( ASI, Indian Society for Astronomy ) is a society of professional astronomers and other professional persons related disciplines.

The company was founded in 1972. Vainu BAPPU was the first president. In 2010, approximately 1000 scientists were members of the Society.

The administrative headquarters is in astronomical faculty of Osmania University in Hyderabad.

The main object is the promotion of astronomy and related disciplines. To organize the ASI events and tried the awareness of astronomy through the Bulletin of the Astronomical Society of India to promote.

The current president is Rajaram Nityananda by the National Centre for Radio Astronomy at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Ganeshkhind, Pune.

The ASI provides a number of awards, of which the most important and most respected Prof. MK Vainu BAPPU Gold Medal is that goes to young researchers in the world, have contributed to the extraordinary to astronomy and astrophysics. Past winners include Y. Fukui (1986 ), Pawan Kumar (1992) and Brian P. Schmidt ( 2002).

The company also operates two prestigious lectures: the Modali Endowment Lecture and RC Gupta Endowment Lecture.
