Astronomical Society of the Pacific

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP ) was founded in San Francisco in 1889. It has the legal status of a non-profit organization.

It is the largest astronomical society in the world with members in over 70 countries worldwide. The organization supports astronomical education and publishes the popular astronomy magazine Mercury. It also publishes the scientific journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

The ASP awards several annual awards:

  • The Bruce Medal for lifetime contributions to astronomical research. The medal is named after Catherine Wolfe Bruce.
  • The Klumpke - Roberts Award for outstanding contributions to the public understanding and appreciation of astronomy, named after Dorothea Klumpke - Roberts.
  • The Amateur Achievement Award in recognition of significant contributions to astronomy by non- professional in the field of astronomy professionals.
  • The Bart Bok Award, named in honor of the astronomer Bart Bok, awarded jointly with the American Astronomical Society at the International Science and Engineering Fair for outstanding student work in astronomy.
  • The Thomas Brennan Award for exceptional performance in terms of astronomy teaching in secondary schools.
  • The Maria and Eric Muhlmann Award for recent important observational results that have been achieved by innovative advances in astronomical instrumentation, software, or observational facilities.
  • The Robert J. Trumpler Award, named in honor of the astronomer Robert J. Trumpler, awarded to the recipient of a recently awarded doctoral degree with a particularly remarkable doctoral thesis.
