Description
Astrophytum ornatum growing with dark green, spherical to cylindrical bodies that are covered with scattered white or yellow hair tuft. You can reach heights of growth from 30 to 100 centimeters in diameter and 15 to 30 centimeters. The most 8 sharp ribs are arranged spirally and sometimes wear yellowish, often balding areoles. The springing from the areoles prominent yellow spines are brownish or gray in old age. There are a central spine and 5 to 10 flattened spines present.
The bright yellow flowers are 7-8 inches long. The fruits tear from their base on towards the middle and open star-shaped.
Distribution, systematics and hazard
Astrophytum ornatum is common in the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí.
The first description as Echinocactus ornatus by Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame was published in 1828. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose they put 1922 in the genus Astrophytum.
In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN, the type is known as " Vulnerable (VU) ," ie, performed as endangered.
