Atlético San Francisco

Atlético San Francisco is a Mexican football club from the city, in the state of Guanajuato town of San Francisco del Rincón. The club was between 1992 and 1999 represented for seven years in their second- highest division of the country.

History

League

Atlético San Francisco started in the third class at the time still Tercera División and rose after they won the championship of the 1991/92 season in the Segunda División second-rate. In this league the team played until the introduction of La Liga 'A', which was the second highest division of the country from the 1994/95 season and the Segunda División de facto the third- highest division degraded.

In the inaugural season of La Liga 'A' ranked San Francisco in the overall standings to third place and was able to qualify in the subsequent play-offs for the semifinals. Cup

In the seasons 1994/95, 95/96 and 96/97, as the second division clubs were allowed to participate in the Mexican cup competition, the team from San Francisco get two sensational first-round victory over Guadalajara ( 3-2 in 1994/95 ) and Toluca ( 1: 0 in 1995/96 ), before they failed at just under América ( 0:1) and Pachuca (1-2) in the second round. 1996/97 of the cup competition was held in groups of eight teams, with San Francisco came in last place, but in the opening game again a first division team, this time the UAG Tecos could defeat 2-1.

Nickname

The nickname Brujos ( witches ) was created by a legend, according to which the municipality of San Francisco del Rincón is populated by witches. The legend was probably due to the region growing, onion -like plant.
