Au (Vorarlberg)

Au is one marked by the tourism community with 1708 inhabitants (December 31, 2013) in the Bregenz district in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg.

Geography

Au is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, Bregenz district in the back of the Bregenzerwald.

40.0 % of the area is forested and 34.4 % of the area Alps.

The territory of Au borders eight other municipalities in Vorarlberg. Of these, six are - namely the communities DAMLS, Mellau, Schnepfau, Bizau, Bezau and Schoppernau - as well as Au in the political district of Bregenz. The two neighboring communities Fontanella and Sunday (Vorarlberg ) are located in the adjoining district of Bludenz.

History

The first inhabitants in the region of Au Alemanni were originally, and came mostly from the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley or the Bregenz area. A permanent settlement should already be done about 1200-1300, but was already inaugurated in 1372 a chapel in Jaghausen.

The territory of the municipality was in possession of King Rudolf von Habsburg, the area later the Counts of Montfort - Bregenz ceded. The Counts of Montfort - Feldkirch, received the area by inheritance and used it for hunting. At this time the name was " Jaghausen in the Owen ", as the Count had built here their cabin. In 1375, Count Hugo von Montfort sold the territory to Austria.

Au was the center of Au Guild, which was largely responsible for baroque architecture in Southern Germany, Switzerland and the Alsace. In Au the resident architect families Thumb and Beer developed in the 17th century, the Baroque Vorarlberg Münster scheme:

In November 1762, a large rock fall occurred on the basket Schroffen and altered the landscape significantly.

From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. The old school house in Jaghausen was opened in 1825 and a private school house was built in 1850 then in Rehmen. For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg Au heard since its founding in 1861.

The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

Economy and infrastructure

At the site there were in 2003 58 companies in the industrial sector with 349 employees and 38 apprentices. Taxable wage -employed, there were 709 tourism and tourism are important. In the tourism year 2001/2002 there were a total of 191 173 overnight stays.

Established businesses

  • The Vorarlberg Children's Village was founded in 1951 by Kaplan Au Rehmen Hugo Kleinbrod and moved in the late 1970s to Bregenz, Kronhalde.
