Auenstein (older Gauenstein, in local dialect: [ ˌ g̊æʊ̯ə ʒ̊tæɪ̯ ] ) is a municipality in the district of Brugg in the canton of Aargau, about three kilometers north-west of Lenzburg on the river Aare.

Geography

The village is situated between the north bank of the Aare River and the southern slope of the 772 meter high Gislifluh, a survey of the southern chain of the Jura Mountains. The places very steep slope is forested for the most part, but has a number of forest pastures. The Gisifluh goes over to the east in the increasingly shallower Veltheimerberg, on the eastern slope of a quarry is located. History

The first definite mention of the place name was made in 1299 ( Ůlr. Gowenstein ). He probably comes from a composition of the words OHG GAWI / waxed / gowi, MHG göu (w) / gou (w), Gau, fertile land in the water ' and stone, stone, rock '. Around 1200, a small castle Auenstein had arisen on the floodplain. The builders are not known with certainty, probably it was the Lords of Gowenstein.
