Auer rod

Auer rods are small, rod-shaped, azurophilic granules, which can be found in the context of leukemia in the cytoplasm of myeloblasts and promyelocytes.

Auer rods are found in about 30 % of cases in acute myeloid leukemia ( AML) and in the context of myelodysplastic syndromes. It is irregular cell organelles containing lysosomal enzymes and signs of disturbed maturation of the cell.

Cells that have multiple Auer rods in bundles are called Faggot cell. They can occur at the promyelocytic leukemia (AML -M3 ).
