August Leopold von Reuss

August Leopold von Reuss ( 5 * November 1841 in Bilin ( Bílina ), Bohemia, † September 4, 1924 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ophthalmologist.

Life

Reuss was the son of August Emanuel von Reuss and came from an old medical and academic family, his father was August Emanuel von Reuss. He studied from 1859 at the Karl- Ferdinand University in Prague, and from 1863 to 1865 at the University of Vienna. In Prague, he became a member of the Corps Austria. In 1865 he received his doctorate in Vienna in 1867 as a surgeon. He was a student of Ernst Wilhelm von Bridge and Edward Hunter of Jaxtthal. From 1866 to 1870 he worked as a clinical and private assistant of Carl Ferdinand von Arlt. In 1870 he qualified as a professor of ophthalmology and subsequently worked as a lecturer. In the years 1872-1922 he was Director of the Department of Ophthalmology of the newly founded Vienna Polyclinic, where he gave much attended lectures. 1884/85 he was second conductor of the Second Eye Clinic. In 1885, Reuss was an extraordinary professor and in 1889 Deputy Head of Department, whose director he was from 1909 to 1918. In 1904 he received a titular and 1914 an honorary professorship. He also worked as a municipal arms ophthalmologist from 1881 and operating an extended practice. Reuss began his work by the exact mathematical side of Ophthalmology ago (optics, Ophthalmometrie, corneal curvature ) and developed his own method of eye screening. He also turned to professional and school -related eye disease to ( influence of near work on development of myopia among pupils, color vision, color blindness and refraction at the railway and naval personnel ) and was by his suggestions a pioneer of school hygiene. Importance are his studies of the visual field in nervous diseases, especially in traumatic neuroses. He has authored 76 scientific papers, numerous ophthalmic educational booklets and several botanical essays.

Others

After Reuss Reuss color plates are named with the help earlier, the degree of color blindness was found. His son August Reuss (1879-1954) was professor of pediatrics in Graz and Vienna, as well as, inter alia, head of the Reich Institute for " maternity and infant welfare " in Vienna Glanzing. In his book The diseases of the newborn, published in Berlin in 1914, he became a pioneer of the Vienna neonatology.
