August Palm

August Theodor Palm ( born February 5, 1849 in the Församling Sallerup, Malmo County, † March 14, 1922 in Stockholm ) was one of the first Swedish Social Democrats and agitator.

Life

August Palm was a skilled tailor who worked in Germany and Denmark for several years. There he came into contact with socialism, which he joined. From Germany reported due to socialist agitation, August Palm moved to Denmark.

Once an application for naturalization in Denmark had been rejected, August Palm drove in autumn 1881 to Sweden and started in Malmö a propaganda tour through Sweden, where he spread the socialist ideas. In 1882 he founded in Malmö, the first social democratic newspaper Folkviljan ( People's Will ).

1885 Palm moved to Stockholm, where he founded the newspaper Social Democrats. In 1889 he was a founding member of the Social Democratic Workers' Party, but disputes with other party comrades, among others with Hjalmar Branting, led gradually to an ever-increasing isolation within the party.

At the age of 73 years August Theodor Palm died on 14 March 1922 in Stockholm.
