August Sang

August Sang ( born July 27, 1914 in Pärnu, † 14 October 1969 in Tallinn) was an Estonian poet and literary translator.

Life and work

August Sang graduated 1932, the boys' high school in Pärnu. After his military service, he studied from 1934 to 1942 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu. Several times he had to interrupt his studies to earn money.

Even as an eight- year-old wrote August Sang own poetry. Under the pseudonym Injo he took in 1933 to a literary contest in the youth magazine Kevadik with his poem Improvisatsioon quick -step tempos successfully participated. In 1934 he made ​​his debut in the literary culture magazine Looming. In 1936, his collection of poems Üks noormees otsib õnne with which he scored his breakthrough. Since that time, he also wrote numerous reviews and essays on literature. In the late 1930s he joined the literary circle Arbujad. Appeared in 1939 Sang's second volume of poetry Müürid, which mainly end-time visions.

After the Soviet occupation of Estonia Sang joined in 1945 the Soviet Writers' Union of Estonia, then distanced himself but from him, and in 1950 was excluded. It was only from 1955 was allowed to be officially working as a writer with the permission of the Soviet authorities again. A year later he reappeared at the Writers' Union.

In addition to his literary work translated August Sang poetry from German, Russian, French and Czech, as well as prose, among others, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Peter Weiss, ETA Hoffmann, Maxim Gorky, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Franz Kafka, Gottfried Keller, Molière, Egon Erwin Kisch and Lion Feuchtwanger.

Private life

August Sang was with the Estonian writer Kersti Merilaas (1913-1986) married. Their son is the poet Joel Sang ( b. 1950 )
