August Schoenborn

August Schoenborn (* 1827 in Erfurt, † January 24, 1902 in Washington DC ) was a German - American architect.

Life

August Schoenborn studied architecture at the Academy of Sciences in Erfurt profit. In 1849 he emigrated to the United States two years later and found a job in the Official Architect of the Capitol, the incumbent is responsible for maintenance, operation, development and maintenance of the Capitol complex in Washington. In the years 1851 to 1863 extensive renovations took place at the United States Capitol. The dome of the Capitol was designed by August Schoenborn, he was inspired by St Peter's in Rome and the Invalides in Paris. The dome of this size 1851 was a technical risk, since it was first used cast iron for the construction of such a large dome.
